This weekend, Michael's was offering a special "Tall Cakes" class. It's been a few years since I've taken any cake decorating classes, so my best friend and I signed up to learn how to do a topsy turvy cake. We had fun being in class together again, but not so much fun doing the cakes! I learned three things in this class:
1. I have now accumulated enough cake decorating supplies, that lugging what I need to make a cake all the way to Michael's is way more trouble than it's worth!
2. Surprisingly, it is much easier to cut a cake level than crooked.
3. Topsy turvy cakes really should require more than a one night, three hour course.

For a Little Cupcake!
There's nothing quite like the first birthday! The "Little Cupcake" theme is what I chose when my Sugar turned one in April. It was a huge hit, and I had a lot of fun doing it. So I was excited when I was asked to do the same cupcakes and smash cake for the first birthday of another little girl. The cupcakes themselves are my favorite...they make me think of an old fashioned ice cream soda shoppe!

Monkey Business
Originally, this cake was supposed to be a baby shower surprise for my sister's co-worker. It wound up being a "Welcome Baby" surprise instead, thanks to an unexpected hospital visit for my Spice on the day I needed to decorate! But it all worked out in the end, and I'm glad I got to eventually give them the cake to celebrate their little monkey! A little browsing through her baby pictures on Facebook, and voila! A cake to match the nursery theme!

End of Summer
Saying good-bye to summer this weekend with two fun in the sun parties! The first was a birthday pool party for an 8 year old. Cupcakes with fun bright colors and tiny fondant flip flops. Even a special pink one for the birthday girl.
The second was a bridal shower for a beach wedding. A small cake with a beach scene and cupcakes to match. More fondant flip flops, graham cracker "sand," and chocolate palm trees. Yum!
